Mineville Energy Storage Project

FERC PROJECT NO. 12635-002

Located in the Town of Moriah — once the heart of New York's iron ore mining industry — the Mineville Project is a 270 MW long-duration energy storage facility that will repurpose existing, abandoned iron ore mine infrastructure deep underground. Its design features two underground reservoirs operating in a closed loop, with no interaction with other bodies of water. Pumped storage is New York's largest and most mature grid-scale storage technology, and — building on the state's long legacy of hydroelectric power — the Mineville Project adds incremental capacity to this valuable resource base. By storing surplus electricity when demand is low and dispatching it when demand is high, the Project strengthens grid reliability and stability, helps integrate intermittent wind and solar generation, and provides the flexible, long-duration storage New York needs to advance its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goals of 70% renewable electricity by 2030 and a zero-emissions grid by 2040.

Capacity: 270 MW
Location: Moriah, NY
